Housing Support Worker

Contract Position August 2015 – March 2016

Full time position

 

 

Dartmouth Housing Help (DHH) is an adjunct program of Halifax Housing Help which is an innovative approach responding to at-risk and difficult to house individuals who have significant challenges in obtaining and retaining housing stability. The project aims to promote housing retention and improved health and social functioning among individuals who experience housing instability. The Dartmouth Housing Help Office is a joint project of Metro Non-Profit Housing and The Public Good Society of Dartmouth. Long term funding is being provided by United Way of Halifax Region. Housing Nova Scotia has provided additional funding for the current fiscal year which allows employing a full time worker at the DHH office. As a result, we are seeking a qualified person to manage and develop the Dartmouth Housing Help program. This is a contract position from August 2015 until March, 2016, with potential for renewal. This position will be based out of the satellite office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

 

DUTIES OF HOUSING SUPPORT WORKER

The Housing Support Worker shall:

 

  • Oversee general operation of the office facilities and housing support program of DHH
  • Assist clients with completion of rental application forms and provision of overall program information
  • Assist clients in finding a suitable place to live;
  • Assist clients, either directly or by referral, to get the supports they need to maintain a stable housing arrangement;
  • Ensure confidentiality is respected at all times, and particularly in relation to applicants;
  • Develop an outreach approach for prospective and current tenants, relevant organizations and landlords; and
  • Develop a series of resources that will be used to support the services offered through the office as well as provide a base for future development of the office, e.g. inventory of landlords, apartments, organizations involved in housing and homelessness.

The Housing Support Worker will work independently and in conjunction with the HHH team in providing a broad range of services for individuals to obtain and retain safe and affordable housing in a rapid fashion. Through onsite and outreach contact, the housing support worker will meet with individuals seeking housing support and complete a rapid intake assessment. The housing support worker will collaborate with landlords and property managers to match the individual with the appropriate housing placement.

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and / or credentials:

 

  • Education and/or experience in health education/promotion, human services, social work or related field
  • Working knowledge of the determinants of health and services available within the community that impact upon an individual’s ability and/or opportunity to move beyond personal and systemic barriers.
  • Knowledge of issues and resources in the community related to homelessness, poverty, harm reduction, mental health and addiction issues, community development and capacity building.
  • Excellent problem solving skills and understanding of the barriers that deter at-risk individuals from obtaining and maintaining safe and affordable housing.
  • Strong team player and ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Good organizational, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Some computer skills and report writing required

Interim Housing Support Worker

Two Month Contract Position

Full time position

 

DUTIES OF INTERIM HOUSING SUPPORT WORKER

The Housing Support Worker shall:

 

  • Provide assistance to the current Housing Support Worker
  • Oversee office functions and client service in the absence of the current Housing Support Worker
  • Enter current clients records into HIFIS
  • Carry out research into the special housing needs of selected client groups, e.g. those with mental health and addiction challenges, seniors
  • Assist with development of an outreach approach for prospective and current tenants, relevant organizations and landlords;
  • Assist with development a series of resources that will be used to support the services offered through the office as well as provide a base for future development of the office, e.g. inventory of landlords, apartments, organizations involved in housing and homelessness.
  • Develop a series of information brochures that provide an overview of the DHH office. These will be similar but with a focus for at least each of: clients, landlords, referring agencies. Some of the research above is intended to be used to develop funding proposals, therefore a funder focus brochure should also be considered.
